PGA-JLG-LogoThe Alabama Junior Golf Association is very pleased to announce that we have established a long-term agreement to introduce and manage the PGA Junior League Golf (PGA JLG) in Alabama.

PGA JLG is designed to better socialize the game of golf for participants Age 13 and under. The program features a team-vs-team format in a structured league providing a popular, less stressful, scramble format.

PGA JLG is a great way to get the entire family involved in golf, with parents as spectators, team-mothers, and even coaches.

There is no individual scoring in PGA JLG. The two-player scramble format allows for all participants to feel connected with the team. Strong play is rewarded, while a poor shot does not lose the hole. Players of all skill levels are welcome and will contribute to the team’s success. Every player gets to play…in every competition!

In PGA JLG the focus is to have fun playing golf with your friends. PGA JLG teams want to win, but the stress often associated with individual medal play tournaments is eliminated by the low-pressure format and the camaraderie of playing on a team with your friends. Our goal is to foster an enjoyment of the game that will last a lifetime.

If you are interested in starting a PGA JLG League or Team at your golf club contact the Alabama Junior Golf Association at (205) 594-3267 or visit  www.pgajrleaguegolf.com to get started!

The Tour Division is a new 9-Hole Division offered by the Alabama Junior Golf Association.

This division is designed for Boys ages 8 to 13 and Girls ages 8 to 14 that are fairly skilled in the game of golf, but are in the process of developing their competitive game.

These players traditionally have higher handicaps and are less experienced in tournament golf. With the wide range of ability levels within the game of golf we look to give each player the ability to enjoy and compete.

Tour Division Juniors will be playing 9-hole rounds at yardages between 2,400-2,800 yards. Once you have made the move up to the 18-Hole Division, you may not move back down to the Tour Division without approval from the Alabama Junior Golf Association. (The Alabama Junior Golf Association reserves the right to move players who are excelling up into the 18-Hole Division.)

1-Day Tournaments

The Alabama Junior Golf Association (AJGO) is the statewide, non-profit junior golf association for the State of Alabama.

  • Our Statewide Schedule of more than (50) 1-Day Tournaments is run year-round.
  • 1-Day Tournaments are where junior golfers learn about Tournament Play, Pace of Play, Rules of Golf, Score-keeping, etc.
  • When a player begins to excel in 1-Day Tournaments, it is time to start playing in 2-Day Tournaments.
  • Advanced players will use 1-Day Tournaments to work on new shots – like hitting a “fade” or try out new clubs. You never want to try anything “new” in a 2-Day Tournament! 2-Day Tournaments cost too much to “practice” a new shot or club.
  • Most players will participate in 8 to 12 1-Day Tournaments each year.

About Qualifier Tournaments

As a competitive junior golfer, the career path is playing in:

  1. State-Level Tournaments – AJGO Tournaments are State-Level Tournaments. Our tournaments are open to all players in the State and each tournament field consists of players from all across the State. You will play in State-Level tournaments more often than any other type of tournaments. This is where you get a lot of your “tournament experience.”
  2. Regional-Level Tournaments are typically 2-Day Tournaments and are open to players from all over a section of the US. The SJGT is a Regional Junior Tour and their tournaments attract players from all over the Southeastern States.
  3. National-Level Tournaments are held by the AJGA, FCWT, and the IJGT. Players in these tournaments are often from all across the US.
  4. National-Championship Tournaments are the very highest level of competition. These tournaments are often considered the “Majors of Junior Golf.” To enter these events you must either earn an Exemption at a State Qualifier Tournament or receive an Invitation.

Here is my list of the “Majors of Junior Golf”:

  • The AJGA Rolex Tournament of Champions
  • The North and South Junior Amateur at PinehurstAlabama Qualifier is on March 2nd
  • The Bubba Conlee National Junior Golf Championship
  • The Polo Junior Classic
  • The Trusted Choice Big-I National Junior ChampionshipAlabama Qualifier is on January 12th-13th
  •  The Southern Junior Amateur
  • The Callaway Junior WorldAlabama Qualifier is on March 9th
  • The Western Junior Championship
  • The FCWT Boys National Championship
  • The USGA Junior Amateur
  • The FCWT Laura Diaz Girls National Championship
  • The USGA Junior Girls Amateur
  • The SJGT Championship TournamentQualifier is on March 16th
  • The Veritas Junior WorldAlabama Qualifier is on February 23rd-24th

The majority of these tournaments are Invitationals or have State Qualifying Tournaments – and for 2013, we are hosting (5) of these State Qualifying Tournaments.

Our goal is to provide Junior Golfers in Alabama with an opportunity to earn a place in the field of one of these Major National Junior Championship Tournaments without having to travel out of State. This is why we believe these State of Alabama Qualifier Tournaments are so important – it makes earning a entry to a National Championship affordable to almost all players.
